Map Making Series
Our relationship with maps is ever-growing and changing as we step into the digital age with almost instant access to information. A map now more than ever has become a part of the daily routine in our lives. We can zoom in and out and adjust and explore the world through a digital lens. Anyone can live stream a camera feed and reach well beyond our current locations. Our visual reach has become vastly larger and is making a world in a way within this new age of digital travel. I am fascinated by this. Historically I have a secret love for the art of map-making and maps throughout history. They provide such amazing insight into the visual understanding of location, myth, and relationship. We now have aerial photography and Google Earth, but I find myself reaching back toward the handmade. There is just something magical about an artist's map, so here is where the story begins! In this ever-growing body of work, I explore map-making, aerial depictions, and location with my own twisted variations and turns. This is a playful and experimental body of work not bound to a set image or theme. Often playing with land and water, I follow my gut instincts and build off visual memory. I leave each of my works not fully part of reality. They are alive with mark-making, detail, and story that still hold the memory of the process they were created through. I leave it to you, the viewer, to travel through, explore and find yourself.
